Shadow Monster Workshop
Offering a different kind of value: not something to hold onto, but something to leave behind.
Service Description
Unresolved thoughts (stress, friction, unfinished conversations, and internal pressures) don’t stay contained. They consume cognitive bandwidth, reduce focus, and affect how we perform. Research in cognitive psychology shows that writing down worries and physically discarding them can significantly reduce their mental impact, improving working memory and task performance. In one study, participants who wrote down negative thoughts and threw the paper away were better able to let them go than those who kept them. When people have a structured way to offload what they’re carrying, they think more clearly and operate more effectively. The Shadow Monster Workshop turns this principle into a tactile, shared experience. Participants begin by journaling, naming the thoughts or patterns they’re ready to release. These writings remain private but become the armature of a sculptural form. Using clay embedded with wildflower seeds, each person creates a “shadow monster,” giving physical shape to what once lived only in the mind. This is not about keeping the object. It’s about release. After the workshop, the sculptures are broken apart and returned to the earth. The paper armatures are burned. As the clay dissolves, it releases wildflower seeds, allowing what’s been let go to become something living and generative. Nothing is kept, but something is transformed. In place of a physical artifact, participants receive a custom zine documenting the process: the monsters, their destruction, and the transformation that follows. It captures not the worries themselves, but the act of release—the moment something shifts from being held to being let go. Outcomes include: Reduced cognitive overload and mental clutter Increased focus, clarity, and decision-making Support for emotional regulation and stress processing Reinforced psychological safety through nonverbal expression A shared sense of reset and renewal This workshop is especially effective during high-pressure periods, post-project decompression, and times of individual, team, or organizational realignment.
